Progressive Rugby thank mercurial fly-half Danny Cipriani for setting a shining example to thousands of rugby players by leaving the field by choice this weekend.

Cipriani, who was playing his first game for his new club Bath, was on the end of a fierce but legal, although offside, tackle from 17-stone Sale Sharks centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

While the England playmaker took a resulting penalty shot at goal, he alerted the referee and his medical team he needed a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) which he subsequently failed.

Progressive Rugby tweeted:

Thank you Danny Cipriani.

An amazing example to set players at all levels of the game. It’s actions like these that empower others to look after themselves and their teammates.

You always impact the game, time may show this to be one of your finest contributions.

BT Sport also noted Cipriani’s actions tweeting:

“Class from Danny Cipriani

“The Bath fly-half was on the receiving end of a heavy hit from Rohan Janse van Rensburg. Clearly struggling, he alerted the referee and the medical team and was taken off for a HIA. Maturity.

Bath’s director of rugby Stuart Hooper has confirmed that Cipriani will play a limited role in training this week at Farleigh House.

Hooper said: “Danny is on his graduated return to play now [following a failed HIA] and if all that goes well it will allow him to play at the weekend.”

Progressive Rugby will be watching with interest to see if Cipriani is selected to make his home debut at The Rec against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday.
