Queensland Reds and Wallaroos hooker Averyl Mitchell has hung up her boots aged just 26 following a number of concussions.

Mitchell, who only took up rugby when she was 18, took to Instagram to announce her retirement saying she was having to “pull the pin on playing footy.”

She wrote: “I’ve had a fair few concussions playing and just had one too many this year. After a bunch of advice and some really hard decisions it’s become pretty clear that it’s time to hang up the boots.

“While I’m devastated my playing days have come to an end, I am so grateful to have experienced this journey.

“Representing my club, state and country have been some of the greatest honours of my life. It meant, and means everything to me. I’ve made incredible friends and memories.

“Thank you so much to everyone who was there along the way and was part of this amazing experience.”
